Mahendranath Gupta

Disciple of Sri Ramakrishna

Mahendranath Gupta (1854–1932), reverentially known as “M.” or “Master Mahashay,” was a householder disciple of Sri Ramakrishna and the recorder of many of the Master’s conversations. His diaries became the Bengali classic Sri Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita, later known in English as The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna, one of the foundational texts of the Ramakrishna-Vedanta tradition. Through his careful preservation of Sri Ramakrishna’s teachings, M. rendered an enduring service to spiritual seekers in India and around the world.
